US Treasury Secretary says sanctions not targeted at Russian debt

WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (PRIME) – The new sanctions against Russia proposed by the U.S. Treasury to the Congress do not target the country’s debt, but bad people and companies, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said late on Tuesday.

Earlier in February, news agency Bloomberg published a U.S. Treasury report saying that expansion of the sanctions to new Russian debt may destabilize global markets and spread beyond the country to have “negative spillover effects into global financial markets and businesses.”

In August 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a bill introducing additional sanctions against Russia.
